August 12, 2023
10:00 AM
President Mary Augustus calls the meeting to order at 10:08 AM
Summary of last month’s minutes read by Secretary Lynne Belokopitsky. Motion to accept by Nancy Lantry. Seconded by Ed Googins.
Treasurers report presented by Treasurer Linda Barzee. Balance is $10,711.74 after payments for 2023 Treatment, $2500 escrow for Williamstown Town Attorney (Lake District) and other miscellaneous expenses. Motion to accept by Pam King. Seconded by Jack Lantry.
Elections are today. Grant has declined to run for Treasurer.
The Duck Race will be held after today’s meeting. We were going to cancel it, but the weather has turned nice and it’s on.
Election – Mary needs three people to compile absentee ballots and in-person voting. Linda Sue Thompson, Dave Hardt and Tina Knutti will be the volunteers that count the votes.
Lynne, Nick, Lauren and Bob went to the Town Board Meeting. The Board unanimously voted to approve a proposed resolution for our Lake District. One person came to the Town meeting and expressed her opposition to the plan. The next step is a Public Hearing on September 13. Please show up at the Public Hearing to express your opinion to the Town Board. Mary summarized the goals and purposes of the Lake District. The Town Attorney didn’t have a lot of changes to our documents, so we’re hoping we get some of our $2500 escrow deposit back.
Roger says the weeds are the worst they’ve ever been. Mark stated that we can only kill invasive weeds.
Green Pond – Jay called Gary and Jim, the folks involved with the Lease of the hunting club. Ted that some people are getting out and fishing from the shoreline. Also, somebody got into an argument with Barclay’s son. Jim is going to contact Barclay and make sure they are all on the same page regarding access and fishing. We can boat on the water. We can fish from the water.
Tad contacted the DEC and said that we can boat on navigable water. There was no discussion about fishing, but it is our understanding that fishing from your boat is allowed.
Jay suggested that we put up a sign as you enter the pond with the rules.
Denise Hartmann – Fishing Derby next Sunday, August 20. Denise is ready, but needs volunteers. We’ll run it like we have in the past. Jay said that we can use the space and offered the use of his pontoon boat.
Deb and Jack Myles found water chestnut in first lake, but it can be eradicated by pulling. We’ll send a picture of it out via email so you know what to look for. If you see it, please pull it. (Picture added to this post)
There was a discussion about the Jet ski that was using the lake last weekend. It’s a public lake. We can’t control which kinds of watercraft use it, but everyone should respect NYS law, which includes a 5 MPH speed limit within 100 feet of shores/docks.
Deb, how much would it cost to get grass carp? About $100K to conform the damn and then we can’t be certain that DEC will approve it. Also, our weeds are not their favorite food. George Stowers had conversations with the DEC and they indicated that it was unlikely that they would ever issue another grass carp permit.
Question about the culvert. At a recent Williamstown Town Board meeting Chip told us that they were working on it, but that it was not imminent. When they replace it, they’ll have to use a “live bottom” which will increase the volume of water through the culvert and should help with silting.
Mark – For the last 4 years he’s watched Mary work every day for the Lake Association and is impressed by the energy and passion that she put into the job. Her efforts were incredible. The members gave Mary a standing ovation.
