2026 Lake Treatment
- Review options/proposals
- Lake Management Plan found that Eurasian Milfoil is the #1 plant found in the lake, native or non-native.
- ProcellaCOR was the most recommended treatment.
- Plant hormone, not a chemical treatment, that only affects Milfoil
- Short half life
- Low PPB
- Broken down by UV light
- Kasoag Lake is well-suited for this type of treatment as it is relatively still
- Lynne sent out 3 RFPs; received 2 bids back
- Lynne updated treatment map to include additional areas that ADKR did not include on their map (lake-side of Shingle Mill Creek, Stevens’ cove, combined other smaller noted areas into one larger area)
- A-Tip came back at over $43k – KLCA cannot afford this option.
- Ready Scout, LLC came back at ~$32k – KLCA can afford this option according to Treasurer’s financial plan.
- Very qualified, credentialed and highly recommended
- Permitting included
- Will manage testing
- Brenda: The expense will only be for PrecellaCOR, correct? But then we’ll have to pay again for a treatment in 2027?
- Answer: Correct. Between the EOY2025 balance and the 2026 Lake District infusion, the KLCA will have sufficient funds to cover the ProcellaCOR, whose effects of killing Eurasian Milfoil (31% of plant life found in lake) should last 3 years. No other treatments will be applied in 2026. This will leave Pondweed (8% of plant life in lake) and Fanwort (6% of plant life in lake) untreated for 2026 season. Between the EOY2026 balance and the 2027 Lake District infusion, the KLCA will have sufficient funds to cover treatment for remaining invasive species – most likely to return to using Flumiguard. Since, in theory, 31% of invasive plant species will not be present, it is likely that the volume of herbicide needed for the 2027 treatment will be lower and will cost less.
- Flumiguard most likely to be used in subsequent treatments as part of Lake Management Plan.
- Member mentioned possibility of introducing sterile carp; asked if we can hear Panther Lake’s experience before moving forward with a motion to use ProcellaCOR.
- Bruce from Panther Lake on sterile Grass Carp
- Acknowledged that Kasoag Lake may have too many outlets for Grass Carp
- SUNY Oneonta took the lead on Milfoil management plan
- Provided grant of $50,000; Panther Lake paid $5,000 (2013)
- Provided a 25 year plan in 2013; currently no Milfoil
- SUNY Oneonta is currently working on a lake similar to Kasoag Lake; worth following-up to get contact info for the school’s program and projects.
- Panther Lake is private lake
- Homeowners who rent their homes on the lake are required to inspect guest boats to ensure no outside species are introduced.
- Adult Grass Carp eat 5x their bodyweight per day in Milfoil
- Mark A looked into this option around 2015 and along with the DEC, it was determined to not be worth the expense and effort and lack of likelihood to get permit approval by DEC. Gates would be required to be built around outlets according to DEC’s requirements.
- Other concerns shared about stocking: Amish fishing activity
- Lynne offered to revisit the subject of Grass Carp with DEC; noted that her previous research did not look too promising.
- No grants, currently
- Lauren G proposed a committee to look into the possibility of Grass Carp; Lynne suggested we discuss this further at the September meeting.
- Harry T motion to move forward on ProcellaCOR; Penny M second
- Majority in favor
- None in opposition
